Gene was in that special group of physics profs at UCSD who cared about teaching and cared about students. He expected the best from us and gave us the best in return. He had an exceptionable talent for explaining difficult material in an understandable way. When he offered me a student job analyzing quasar spectra, I couldn't believe my good fortune. The first time I was able to calculate a redshift, I ran down the hall like an idiot, stopping everyone to show them. Gene very kindly acted thrilled. I still have a copy of the spectrum. It's one of my prized possession. Gene was a kind, honorable person with a great sense of humor. And he introduced me to Peet's coffee! I'll miss him. Susan Rappoport
